As predicted, this event was a a biggy. Thanks to Peter Matzick for all the preparation before the event and coordination on the day.
We had a couple of aircraft from the Antique Aircraft Association arrive almost in formation with a turbine cropduster who dropped in "due stress of weather". A dozen or so Jaguars, 20 odd Morrises, 10 Model A Fords (and their welcome BBQ trailer), and a dozen motor bikes of various vintages arrived from about 10:00 am. Thanks to all the marshalls who gently directed all this traffic to their allocated parking.
Our Club Executive Chef, Doug Guy, and his band of helpers prepared and serve over 130 meals. Les Kovari and Steve McGuiness were tireless at the various cash registers collecting money for the meals and donations.
Boral Hire must be acknowledged for their donation of the hire of 2 toilets - $360 worth. Thanks Boral Hire.
BORAL PORTABLE CHEMICAL TOILETS
South Coast Air Centre also donated $5.00 from each of the scenic flights conducted on the day.
A very successful day. Altogether we raised over $1,100 for Camp Quality. Peter Matzick has received phone calls and e-mails from various attendees who really enjoyed the day and are looking forward to next year already......
Thanks to every one who participated
Given the number of people who indicated their interest in attending we were a bit disappointed in the number who turned up.
Regardless of the attendance it was a very informative night - with lots of vigorous discussion about the relative safety of the new rules, what frequency we should use etc...
Thank you Graham for the night.
PS: I think we raised $30 for Camp Quality from the Gold Coin Donations
We were privileged to have a select group of members of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators (GAPAN)attend the Club on 20 Nov 03.
Peter Matzick and Harry Walton had worked together to put together a Spot Landing Competition for half a dozen of their bravest. Prior to the comptetition Terry Cahalan attanged for each of the competitors to give a 30 second history of their flying careers. In a word - humbling. It was intersting to note that the Master of the Guild started his training with the RAF in Jets!! In HS Jet Provost.
Some of the flying was also humbling. The competition winner, Capt David Long, scored a 10 out of 10 for air work and landed "in the box" on both landings. This is from a person who last flew in the compeition last year - and the time before that was in a B747 some 7 years before.
A special thanks must go to Doug and Pauline Guy for the superb meal - that included scones, jam and cream for starters.
A good turn out on each day. Lots of hard work and a
bit of swearing (or is that the other way around) saw most of the fence
erected. There are a few panels to be finished and a couple of gates to be
hung. I am sure that the R&B Club will get to that in time. Thanks TC for all your preparatory work!! Only 2 aircraft reported that
they attemped to deliver the ordnance onto the airfield at "Timbertop". On
Monday I did a ground expection of the target site. Unfortunately there
was absolutely no evidence any aerial delivered ordnance - either exploded
or unexploded. Either you missed or ...... I guess you missed.
A Night Flying competition was conducted on The competition consisted of
a short flight followed by 3 circuits.
Plan to arrive at 17:30 hours for Graham Dean's briefing
and then take to the skies after last light.
For the 2nd year running we have had to cancel the flight because of atrocious conditions. Maximum wind gusts of 100kph on top of Sellicks Hill, Thunder and Lightning, Rain Squall - the whole nine yards.
Almost 20 people turned up at the early hour inspite of the conditions. Because the flying was cancelled Doug started cooking breakfast earlier than the original plan and because it was so cold no one put up any arguments. As usual it was a splendid fare and special thanks to Doug and Pauline for their preparation on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to put on the breakfast.
Pastor Ned Carmichael gave an interesting account of his recollections of the key turning points of WWII, including the Battle For Britain. He concluded with a short prayer of thanks for those who sacraficed their all.
The AGM is probably one of the most important meetings in any club's calendar.
To tempt a few more to the AGM than usual it will be preceeded by a sumptious barbecue
cooked by the club's own Chief Executive Chef.
Doug Guy and his team of helpers(including Lloyd's daughter, all the way from NSW) put on a superb meal.
Terry Cahalan welcomed all to the tribute barbecue and on behalf of the Club presented Lorraine Ferguson with a Photograph of Paul getting ready for a Beach Patrol.
Pastor Ned Carmichael offered prayers of comfort for Lorraine and family and for Amy Grant and family.
Over $400 dollars was raised by club for the "Amy Grant Foundation" and was presented to Amy's dad on the Day.
The Aldinga Wx was at it's usual worst (Murray had cancelled flying) so we didn't go ahead with the planned competition and flying. Instead we stayed warm inside the club house and celebrated Lloyd Issakson's Birthday. Had we known we could have also celebrated Gordon Burnard's birthday also
We had visitors from the Edinburgh Flying Group fly in for the afternoon in 3 aircraft - in spite of somewhat threatening weather. They didn't compete in our competition, however I'm sure that they had a great day with us as we did having them turn up.
The competition turned out to be Verrry Interrresting, with a normal circuit, a circuit with the instruments covered so that the Competitor could not see them, and finally a third extended circuit with some IF work, followed up with a Practice Forced Landing - onto the field.
Lucky we had Murray onboard to keep things from getting out of control. Thanks Murray!!
The placings in a very close competition were:
You can read Craig's report in the May edition of GoRound
By all accounts it was a well run and enjoyable competition.
Many thanks Craig.
At at Teleconference on Saturday morning at 07:00 we all agreed, in the interest of safety, to give it away.
The Wx as it turned out probably wasn't as bad as forecast, however, that's the way it is with GA.
I have since spoken to the owner of Mungo Lodge and he has kindly agreed to allow us to hold the deposit over for another time. He is a pilot so he is accutely aware of the problems of Wx.
The day started at 12n with the Barbecue and joy flights for the guests started at 13:00. Flights were flown in JPW, IES, XBD and DBH and all (I think)really enjoyed the experience.
Terry Cahalan thanked all who had contributed to the Beach Patrols and thanked everone for their attendance.
Thanks are alo due to Doug and Pauline Guy for the preparation, Doug and Des for the cooking and everyone who brought a salad. Thanks to the pilots on the day who took joy flights (and to the one who undertook a joy taxi).
A Great Day!
Paul died on Sunday 9 February 2003 as a result of a motor vehicle accident while he was driving to Aldinga Airport.
Paul was going to Aldinga to take his mother and aunt on a joy-flight. He was also scheduled to fly a beach patrol later that afternoon.
Paul's love of anything 'aviation' was clearly obvious to me, and I imagine to anyone that knew him.
I recall the first time that he made himself known to the club. We were all sitting in our little shed (the former club house) when Paul stepped into the doorway. The room went dark as Paul blocked off all the light. We soon got to realise that he was in fact a very gentle giant.
Within a short time of becoming a member of the Club he was extremely active and participated in all activities.
People with Paul's energy and enthusiasm, the desire to join in and help are all too few and far between.
Paul will be sorely missed.
The briefing was smewhat poorly attended for numerous reasons. However alternative briefings have occurred.
It was interesting to note that a great school of sharks that made the TV a few weeks ago were spotted and reported by Peter Matzick and Tom Rodgers while Peter was doing a route check with Tom.
The Pilot briefings have all occurred with Observer Briefings scheduled for 19 Jan 03 at 14:00.
They took up residence on 27 Jan 03 and moved in some tables, chairs and cupboards.
They have had a couple of working bees, 19 Jan 03 to clean up the outside and the 27 Jan 03 to set the inside.
They have also planned the following events to which we have all been invited

BBQ and Exercise IFR (I Feel Ridiculous) - 1 June 2003
The day started as usual with something special turned on by the Club Executive Chef - Doug Guy. We started with a heart warming soup, followed by a delightful curry and finished off with bbq and salad. All for $5 per head for members - really great value. Doug, I don't know what you are going to do to top it.
If nothing else: the competition reinforced what I already know - keep out of cloud.
May 2003
March/April
Lake Mungo Flyaway 12-13 April 03
The forecasts put paid to the Mungo fly-away. The forecast didn't look too bad???
to get out of Aldinga on Saturday - however it all looked pretty terrible to
get home on Sunday. We consulted the ABC, Foxtel Weather Channel, NAIPS Briefing,
The Elabrative briefing from BOM. They all agreed - it was predicted to be pretty
ordinary.
Wind-Up Social Day
About 40 people turned up for the social day to celebrate the conclusion of another year of beach patrols, and to thank all who have contributed. We had representatives from MIX1023, Street (Air) Crew and the On-Air Team, Airservices Australia, The Attorney General's Department, Emergency Services and SCAC.
Beach Patrols
The beach patrols have now finished for this season and a very successful season it was. TC and I will be working with Surf Lifesaving over the next week or two to produce a post operation report. I will keep you advised of the output.

Vale - Paul Ferguson
Paul Ferguson 1956 - 2003
Go-Round grew from 2 pages (pre-Paul) to 8 or 9 and a lot of it was
based on Paul's exploits while learning to fly He often said he'd keep writing
about himself until someone in the club would help by writing an article or two.
