| History | The first Glass Factory was originally established in Lauscha, Germany in the year 1597. As the years passed many breakthroughs in glass technology came from Lauscha glass technologists. In 1832 the glassblower Ludwig Müller-Uri developed the first artificial eye from glass. The following 166 years have seen the Lauscha glass experts improve the glass eye fabrication technology to the high level of quality and appearance we see today. |
| Material | The material for the artificial eyes of glass is a special kind of glass "Cryolite" glass which is a scientifically formulated unique glass melt used specifically for creating a synthetic human eye. No other material is equal to Cryolite glass with regards to tissue neutrality and surface hardness, this special glass compound offers the eye prosthesis wearer the following benefits:
A natural appearance. Maintains shading compatibility to skin tone Hygroscopic (retains natural eye fluids - unlike the acrylic which is water repellent.) Hygienic (cleansed with cold water at least once a day). Scratch resistant. |
| Manufacturing of Glass Prosthesis | Mr Paul McClarin is the only person in Australia able to manufacture the glass eye. He was taught this art by a former resident of Lauscha and glass eye maker.
A selection of eyes are used for fitting to determine: Size and Shape Colour of Iris Size of Iris Size of Pupil Sclera Colour Venation indication. Tubing is blown into a ball, coloured glass is applied in five different stages (for the colour of the iris). Black for the pupil and on top of this, crystal is applied to highlight the colours and finally red glass is used for the veins. The molten glass is sized and shaped in order to fit the individuals eye socket. |
| Psychology | While the loss of an eye is very traumatic and can never be replaced the use of natural glass in the construction of an artificial eye is unmatched in the re-creation of the beauty and appearance of the original eye. It helps with facial harmony and gives the wearer reassurance and self confidence. |
