The Holden Story
The year 1960 ticked over and with the new decade
came a new era in Holdens. The FB was released in January that
year.
It was heralded as the most exciting car in
years. The model range was altered with the Business sedan being
dropped and a Special station sedan included. A high-roof van was
introduced.
The FB was lower, wider and longer. There were mechanical
improvements and re-styling inside and on the front and rear of
the car.
The 132.5 cu. in. engine which powered the 48/215, FJ, FE and FC
was stretched to 138 cu. in.
The increase in torque gave flexibility, better top gear
performance and cut down the strain on the engine. Heavier front
coils and wider rear springs were fitted to improve ride and
handling. There were new rear wheels bearings incorporating
spring loaded synthetic rubber seals for better protection. A
double row ball race was placed on the main gearbox shaft to
increase transmission life. Braking area was increased.
The seats were wider and seating position altered. With a lighter
brake and clutch pedal driving was claimed to be more relaxing.
The FB had a full width radiator grille with a lower engine hood,
new hood scoop and higher front fenders. The front parking tights
were in a beehive housing in the grille. The open air grille led
to a plenum chamber for the new variable intake ventilation
system. The ventilator windows were rectangular.
The bumpers were new and in three sections for low cost
replacement. They had over-riders and a depression for the number
plate.
Large diecast mouldings were used for the tail light assembly.
There was a flare on the rear fenders and a slope on the roof.
The new rear end styling produced a larger luggage compartment.
Overall glass area was increased 27 per cent.
The new Interior treatment consisted of stainless steel mouldings
and dielectric patterns on the trims. The instrument panel was
new and the steering wheel was a deep dish type. The glove box
was bigger and had a lock.
GMH introduced 'Magic Mirror' finish-an acrylic duco.
