The Holden Story
The FJ is the car most associated with the Holden
image.
It came off the assembly line on October 29,1953 and into the
Australian way of life.
Instead of one model as with the 48/295-three FJ models were
introduced. They were the Standard, Business and Special sedan
aimed to 'suit all types of operators'. A panel van was
introduced for the first lime (but high roof van not introduced
until FB).
The Standard sedan was basically the same as the 48/215 sedan but
with improved front end styling and some minor mechanical
changes, such as telescopic shock absorbers replacing the lever
action type.
The Business sedan was for commercial travellers, farmers and
hire car operators. It had heavy duty suspension, leathercloth
headlinings, reinforced seating, rubber mats, kick plates and a
higher output generator.
The Special was Holden's first luxury car. It had stainless steel
exterior mouldings, arm rests and leather trim.
The FJ had the same engine, power output, and gearing as the
48/215
A larger engine fan was used.
The car was 1 1/2 in. longer because of the bolder, restyled
front end including grille and emblems.
